Who We Are

Singing A - Z seeks to enrich the lives of children through teaching something of the history and fundamentals of music and its performance, and by sharing in the spirit and the joy of singing together music that fosters an appreciation of the depth and breadth of our musical heritage.

Concerts for  seniors include an educational component as well.  Arts education does far more than teach an artistic skill.

Meet our Music Director and Accompanists

It encourages creativity and teaches self-discipline.  The arts make possible a connection with the cultural heritage of one's community, and beyond that, to the larger world.  Participation in the arts provides a window through which we glimpse values that go beyond the material.

Singing A - Z's wonderfully successful 2005-2006 first season featured eight interactive concerts with two repertoires.  Students at Ketcham Elementary School in Anacostia enjoyed participating in a concert featuring the musical drama, The Reluctant Dragon.  The 25-voice chorus presented a repertoire of music by American composers to seniors in several venues.

In 2006-2007, Singing A - Z returned to Ketcham and initiated programs in Gibbs and Brent Elementary Schools on Capitol Hill.  The season's concert, Take the "A" Train, highlighted music representing our multicultural heritage, and included historical American folk songs, jazz, spirituals, calypso, and music of American Indian, Jewish, and Hispanic origins.

The students traveled on a magical musical journey up the Hudson River and through the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes. They rode trains pulled by the first steam engines, rowed down the Mississippi on keel boats, and sailed on majestic clipper ships around the tip of Florida, through the Caribbean, and to the Sea Islands of Georgia.  They "rode" on the Underground Railroad through Alabama and Tennessee, up to Ohio.

Throughout the journey, their voices were raised in song.  The modes of transportation and places visited were illustrated by a PowerPoint slide show keyed to the music and a large map tracing the route.  Ketcham's principal wrote:  "I highly recommend the performance as a must-see experience."

Seniors enjoyed participating in an appropriately modified version of Take the "A" Train!  St. Mary's Court in Foggy Bottom praised the performance:  "We are writing to thank the singers for providing us with your wonderful and uplifting music."
